Laboratory Internships

The program at ENS Paris-Saclay is a “research-based and research-driven” education. As such, internships are an important part of the Biology DER program. The ENS curriculum requires students to complete several research internships during their studies. Students are free to choose the topic and location of their internships, and receive support from the DER in finding a laboratory. The internships are supervised by various members of the teaching staff and M2 program coordinators.

Early Immersive Research Experiments

  • Introductory Research Internship: Starting in the first semester of their third year of undergraduate studies, students at the École Normale undergo a one-week internship in a laboratory in the Paris region to gain insight into the daily work of researchers and life in a research laboratory.

  • Summer Internship: This 8- to 10-week internship takes place in research laboratories located in France or abroad. The topics covered are diverse and span many fields: oncology, infectious diseases, genetics, bioinformatics, neurology, and more.

2nd Immersive Research Experience

At the end of the first year (M1), students at the École Normale have the opportunity to undertake a second immersive research experience (a mandatory internship for students who are pursuing a higher education track or a interdisciplinary track;  optional for those who will complete a pre-doctoral research year abroad). This experience, lasting 6 to 8 weeks, takes place in research laboratories located in France or abroad. The topics covered are diverse and span many fields: oncology, infectious diseases, genetics, bioinformatics, neurology, etc.

Pre-doctoral Research Year Abroad: ARPE

Students who wish to pursue a Research and International track must complete a year-long internship abroad, known as the ARPE year.

Master's Degree (M2) Internship

All students at the École Normale must complete a research-based M2 program and, as part of that, undertake an internship in a laboratory located in France for approximately 6 months. An internship abroad may be considered with the approval of the M2 program directors.

What happens next?....

After completing their M2 research degree, École Normale students generally pursue a Ph.D.  In the latter case, they apply to various doctoral schools in France.
The dissertation may be funded by a specific École Normale contract or by a doctoral school fellowship. Generally, all of our students receive funding for their doctoral studies.
